Best Islands in Cartagena

As much fun as there is to be had in and near the walled city of Cartagena, you’d have to be an absolute fool not to go to the Rosario Islands and others (which are literally only a 45 minute boat ride from the marinas in Bocagrande). We were those fools our first trip to Cartagena. We won’t let you make that mistake. Tell us what sounds better than waking up to a fully stocked boat or yacht, listening to the perfect music with your favorite cocktails, and cruising around the Caribbean to the most beautiful islands and reefs in existence. Some of the islands you’ll see are visitor friendly, privately owned, or uninhabited due to the effort to preserve their fragile and natural states. Check out our list to understand the islands that you CAN go to and what to expect.

Tierra Bomba Island

Tierra Bomba Island

Although not being a part of the Rosario Islands, Tierra Bomba in only 35 minutes from the marinas in Bocagrande. If you don’t want to spend an entire day boating around the Rosario Islands, Tierra Bomba is a fantastic alternative. You will find beautiful beaches and all the amenities and activities you could ask for, such as massages on the beach, restaurants, jet ski rentals, parasailing, shopping, and bars. We highly recommend stopping by, or spending the night at the Blue Apple Beach house. If there for a day, make sure to grab lunch and cocktails here. You won’t regret it. Contact us if you’d like to stay at this beautiful resort for a night or more.

Playa Blanca on the Island of Baru

Playa Blanca on the Island of Baru

Playa Blanca, one of the more popular beaches on the Island of Baru, is known as one of the most beautiful in Cartagena. Baru has it all and is a perfect spot to get freshly caught seafood platters for lunch. They’re unbelievable. Being so popular, Playa Blanca can get busy at times. With its delicious seafood options, crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and many luxury resorts and spas to explore, you might just end up staying here all day.

Isla Grande

Isla Grande

Isla Grande is a great island to stop and explore. It is an enchanting place where you can explore local villages, experience true Colombian culture, experience some of the best snorkeling, and even check out the “enchanted lagoon”. The enchanted lagoon is best explored at night, however, due to its bioluminescent plankton that lights up this beautiful lagoon. Being the largest island of the Rosario Islands, you’ll actually find less tourists here as compared to some of the other islands listed.

Isla Majagua

Isla Majagua

Isla Majagua, a smaller and more intimate island, is a great choice if you’re looking for something more secluded to relax on. Here you can enjoy some of the freshest fruit and juices in the Caribbean. This island also has great snorkeling and is home to one of Pablo Escobar’s old vacation homes.

Cholon

Cholon

Last, but not least, we have the infamous “party island” of Cholon. With plenty of activities such as jet ski rentals, parasailing, great snorkeling and scuba diving, Cholon has it all. Known for its crystal blue waters, fresh seafood cooked and delivered right to your boat, and waist to chest high waters to party in with others in its lagoon, Cholon gets it goin’. Your Hola Cartagena staff will make sure you experience the best this island has to offer with non-stop drink service and constant attention to your needs.
